Volkswagens: Which way is north?

Certain Volkswagen models equipped with digital compasses may feature an incorrect compass reading, due to incorrect orientation of the compass module. This applies to 2006-2009 Golf and Gti, 2010-2011 Golf Wagon, 2009-2011 Jetta SportWagen and Jetta Wagon, and 2008-2011 Tiguan models.

Lower the rear headliner and inspect for loose mounting pad (hook and loop tape) on the compass module. If the module is loose, remove and re-attach using new hook and loop tape. Make sure that the compass module is properly attached and has the correct orientation.

If the module is not loose but the compass reading is incorrect, set the compass zone according to VW’s zone chart (refer to the service manual).

The black arrow indicates vehicle rear. Note the location of the compass module. Make sure that the roof surface is clean and dry before installing the new hook and loop tape.
