Toyota Corolla musical transmission

Some 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine and an automatic transaxle (ATM) may exhibit a “whistle” or “hoot” noise under light acceleration at 35 mph to 40 mph with the transaxle at normal operating temperature. ATM cooler lines have been modified to reduce this condition on customer complaint vehicles.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the existing ATM cooler lines from the radiator and ATM.

2. Remove the two 10mm bolts that fasten the metal cooler lines to the lower radiator support.

3. Install the replacement service parts as follows:

  a. Orient the yellow and white paint marks as shown in the diagram (yellow toward the radiator and white toward the ATM) and install hose to tube.

  b. Insert the hose securely to the stopper of the radiator tube and cooler tube. When installing, make sure that no foreign matter enters the tube and hose. The tube must not be bent and the hose must not be twisted.

  c. While turning the stopper of the clamp fitting to the radiator support, tighten the oil cooler hose clamp to 4 ft.-lbf. (5 Nm).

4. Verify that ATM fluid level is correct and check for leaks.
