Camshaft timing problem after repairs

The applies to several Toyota vehicles including 2001-2008 RAV4, 2002-2007 Highlander, 2002-2008 Solara, 2009-2011 Matrix, 2002-2009 Camry and 2009-2011 Corolla.

Condition: MIL on and DTC P0012 (Camshaft Position “A” – Timing over-retarded (Bank 1)) stored after recent engine repairs; or DTC P1349 (VVT System Malfunction (Bank 1)) will set for older vehicles. When the VVTi is active-tested through the Techstream, the engine does not run rough or stall.

Check if the vehicle has had any recent repairs that involved service of the cylinder head, camshaft, cam bearing caps or VVT actuator.

Verify that the upper and lower camshaft bearings are present, as one or both may have inadvertently been let out during reassembly, resulting in no oil pressure to the VVTi actuator.

Ensure that the upper and lower camshaft bearings are correctly placed.

Verify that both camshaft bearings are in place and correctly installed.
