Whiney Ford F-Series

Some 2003 Ford F-150 vehicles built on or before 10-7-2002 may exhibit a whine noise from the power steering pump, most noticeable while turning at low speeds. The whine noise is similar to air in the power steering system. This may be caused by the clocking position of the power steering pump backing plate. The corrective action involves removing the pump and re-clocking the backing plate.

  1. Remove the power steering pump per workshop manual section 211-02.
  2. Using channel locks or other suitable tool, rotate the raised “D” casting on the backing plate counter-clockwise until it stops.
  3. Re-install the power steering pump and verify the repair.

Note the “D” shaped casting on the backing plate. Rotate this counter-clockwise until it stops.
