Owners of 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio models may complain that the rear decklid will not latch and that the ajar indicator is illuminated. This condition occurs more often in cold weather conditions.
The concern is caused by the BCM keeping the unlatch motor energized. Once the BCM goes to sleep or if the external trunk handle switch is reactivated, the customer will be able to close the decklid.
The technician may discover that the latch has failed. According to Fiat, programming the BCM will correct this condition.
Verify that the BCM is functioning as designed. Using a scan tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate diagnostic procedures available in TechCONNECT verify that no DTCs are set. If DTCs are present, record and correct as needed before proceeding.
Install a battery charger to ensure that battery voltage does not drop below 13.2 volts. Do not allow charging voltage to climb above 13.5 volts during the flash process.
Flash reprogram the BCM.Clear any DTCs that may have been set in other modules as a result of reprogramming.Verify that the decklid will close and latch properly. If it does not, replace the latch (following the repair procedure in TechCONNECT 23 – Body/Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate/LATCH/Removal and install.
The new latch is available as part number 68084367AB.
