Going to Ground

This bulletin applies to 2012 Fiat 500 vehicles equipped with a manual transmission and built from March 15, 2011, through June 30, 2011. The starter mounting bolts on some of these vehicles may not properly ground the starter motor to the transaxle.

This could cause electrical energy from the starter motor to take an alternate path to ground across the engine crankshaft bearings.

One starter motor mounting bolt must be replaced with a new bolt and a second mounting bolt must be added for grounding reasons only.

The new starter motor bolt package is available as P/N CEA1N151AA.

Remove the starter and inspect the bolt hole for debris and clean as needed. Install a new starter upper mounting bolt and tighten to 20 ft.-lbs.

Remove and discard the original starter motor lower mounting bolt. Install a new lower bolt and tighten to 20 ft.-lbs.

Using the new starter motor bolt package, install a new bolt in the upper mounting location and replace the lower mounting bolt.
