Some owners of 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 vehicles may comment about a “Service Stabilitrac” message in the driver information center. During diagnosis, the technician may find DTC C0196-5A set in the ECM. 

C0196-5A is related to YAW sensor plausibility. GM Engineering has determined that stone impacts to the underside of the transmission tunnel, below the SDM, may cause the YAW/Lat sensor located in the SDM to send signal spikes related to the resonant frequencies of the sheet metal in the 12-14 kHz range.

If the YAW/Lat signals don’t line up with vehicle speed and steering angle sensor data, the EBCM will set C0196-5A as a plausibility fault. Sometimes, the SDM will set C0196-00 (invalid yaw rate data fault). If the stone impingement crosses the internal sensor fault threshold, this may in turn cause the EBCM to set code C0452-71.

After completing any repairs to address DTCs, perform the following procedure to apply deadening material to the transmission tunnel to dampen the frequency of stone impacts to prevent a future occurrence.

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and secure.

2. Locate the area above the transmission and transfer case (if equipped).

3. Ensure the area is free of any debris by cleaning the area with wax and grease remover and dry.

4. Mark the transmission tunnel area to be dampened.

5. Wrap and tape off the transmission, transfer case, propeller shaft, cables, wiring, exhaust, etc. to protect from overspray.

6. Apply a minimum of 3 heavy coats of vibration deadening/damping material to the marked area.

7. Inspect the area to ensure coverage of the area is complete and even.

8. Remove all material used to protect from overspray.
