This bulletin applies to 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro models equipped with a 4.9L engine. Some customers may complain about a tapping noise from the engine compartment after engine warm-up. The remedy involves the installation of a serpentine drive belt and a new design idler pulley using a revised belt routing.

1. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 5 minutes to bring accessory drive components to operating temperature.

2. Set HVAC to windshield defrost mode. Set temperature to the coldest setting and turn on the A/C. While maintaining engine speed between 1,800-2,000 RPM, listen for a tapping sound. If a tapping is heard, shut the engine off and remove the serpentine belt. Do not let the tensioner arm snap back to the free position, as damage to the arm may occur.

3. Re-start the engine and listen for a tapping sound. If the tapping remains, this bulletin does not apply. Continue with diagnostics. If no tapping is heard, perform the repair procedure.

4. Remove the idler pulleys and install new idler pulleys and belt using the revised routing as shown in the accompanying diagram.
