This bulletin applies to 2011 Subaru Legacy, Outback, Impreza and Forester models that experience a rattle noise from the rear suspension, determined to be coming from the upper control arm ball joint. A revised torque specification has been released for the ball joint retaining nut.

Once the condition has been confirmed, remove both rear tire and wheel assemblies. Both sides must be inspected.

Remove the nut and bolt securing the upper control arm ball joint to the bearing housing. Rock the upper arm and the bearing housing as necessary to check for any looseness or free-play in the upper arm ball joint. If any looseness is visible or felt, replace the upper arm assembly for that side of the vehicle.

Always install a new ball joint retaining nut and bolt, and torque to a value of 66.4 ft.-lbs.
