This bulletin applies to BMW 2 Series, 3 Series and 4 Series vehicles. An example is the 2015 320i xDrive. A thumping noise may be heard from the front axle area during slow speed steering.

The noise most frequently occurs at outside temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit and normal engine operating temperature. Only vehicles with the manufacturer Zahnradfabrik (ZF) standard steering gear are affected. 

This issue does not affect the manufacturer Thyssen-Krupp (TKPS).

The issue only occurs with tie rods from the manufacturer CTR (seen at left), not from the manufacturer Lemfoerder (right). CTR tie rods can be identified by the engraving “CTR.”

If the steering gear is made by ZF, remove the tie rod boot clamp and push the boot back to identify the maker of the tie rod. If the tie rod is made by CTR, look for discolored grease. Replace both tie rods.
