This bulletin applies to 2015-2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque and 2013-2015 LR2 vehicles. A rattle noise may be evident from the engine and the MIL may be on. DTC P0016, P0017, P0026 or P0341 may be stored in the PCM.
This may be caused by the “stopper” in the intake camshaft variable cam timing (VCT) actuator becoming detached, leading to the VCT actuator not functioning.
Remove the camshaft cover and inspect the VCT actuator stopper. If it is detached, replace the actuator.
If the actuator is found to be noisy but the stopper is in place, fully rotate the camshaft counter-clockwise and then attempt to rotate clockwise. If no clockwise movement is possible without also rotating the engine, continue to diagnose (see TOPix Workshop manual; section 303-1 – Engine – GTDi 2.0L Petrol – Diagnosis and Testing).
If the camshaft rotates freely in both directions, replace the VCT actuator. Note: No clockwise movement should be possible without also rotating the crankshaft.
