GMC Mystery Noise

This bulletin applies to 2017 – 2018 GMC Sierra, 2019 Sierra Limited and 2017-2019 Yukon vehicles. Some customers may comment on a noise described as a tick, spark, knock, detonation or exhaust. The cause may be that the steering shaft seal (intermediate shaft seal) was incorrectly installed.

An incorrectly installed seal can allow unfiltered sound from the engine compartment into the vehicle interior.

If the noise can be heard near the driver’s foot-well area and no issues related to the engine or exhaust have been identified, inspect the steering shaft seal for proper seating/installation and adjust as needed. If no obvious issues are identified, remove the seal and inspect for any deformation. Reinstall or replace as needed.

Inspect the steering shaft seal. If not positioned correctly, engine compartment noises can be transmitted into the interior.
