This bulletin applies to 2015-2016 Jeep Renegade vehicles (built on or before May 2, 2016) that exhibit a condition wherein the engine does not start at the first attempt. The fix involves upgrading the software in the electronic steering lock (ESL) module.
The customer may experience malfunction on the first attempt to start the engine. Initial cranking is inhibited but should start/crank on the second attempt. The technician may find DTC B1000-01 (electronic control unit – general electrical failure) stored in the ESL module.
Using a scan tool (wiTECH) with procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify that all related systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs are present other than the DTC mentioned earlier, record and repair as needed before proceeding.
Install a battery charger to keep battery voltage between 13.2 and 13.5 volts during the flash process.
Reprogram the ESL with the latest software. Turn off the ignition, disconnect the wiTECH, open and close the driver’s door and let all modules go to sleep. Reconnect the wiTECH and clear any DTCs.
