This bulletin applies to 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles equipped with blind spot detection and side assist, where these features are inoperative.
DTC U104500 may be stored as well. A software deviation in the J1086 blind spot detection module may occur, along with loss of coding caused by CAN bus traffic. The side view mirror may intermittently flash indicating a vehicle is in the blind spot when there is not one present (ghost vehicle detection).
Improved software has been implemented at the factory beginning with VIN AX....JM176571.
Record the customer driver assistance presets from the multi-function indicator. They will be used later, after SVM flash 41B2 is completed.
Deselect all presets prior to starting SVM. Prior to launching the O.D.I.S. service diagnostic applications and starting the control module update process, confirm date/time and time zone. The Windows date/time and time zone settings are used by the diagnostic software as a component of the diagnostic logs submitted for warranty purposes.
Ensure date/time/time zone settings are correct as follows:
1. From the Windows desktop toolbar, double click on the local time indicator.
2. Use the tabs to ensure the current date/time/time zone applicable to your location is set correctly.
To perform the software update after the full vehicle scan and GFF start-up, click on the “Special Functions” tab in O.D.I.S. and select “Adapting Software.” Follow the on screen prompts using the SVM unit code as shown below:
P/N ..................... Old version ............... New version .................... SVM Unit Code
5Q0907686 ........ SW0080 ..................... SW0081 ............................ 41B2
The SVM process must be completed in its entirety so that the database receives the update confirmation response. The O.D.I.S. tester patch version 4.0.0 and the baseline version 2.33.3 or higher must be installed.
Connect an InCharge 940 or GRX3000VAS battery tester/charger to the vehicle battery. Make sure that during the software update no electro-magnetic radiation sources (mobile phones, etc.) are used in or near the vehicle. A cable connection between the O.D.I.S. tester and the vehicle must be used. When using a Bluetooth or WiFi connection the software update may fail.
During the software update, switch the hazard warning lights on to ensure a constant CAN data bus activity of the vehicle. Once the update programming is complete, cycle the key off for 10 seconds. Clear DTCs and make sure that no DTCs return. Note: If DTC remains in Address 0013 – Distance Control,” you must cycle the key off again for 10 seconds to ensure that the fault clears.
Reset the customer driver assist presets that you captured earlier. Select “side assist” from the multi-function indicator and road test to validate operation of the blind spot detection and side assist.
