Parts Plus Driver Wins NHRA Top Fuel Title

The Automotive Distribution Network reports Parts Plus driver Clay Millican won Monday’s rain-delayed 30th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals in Topeka, Kan., earning the second national event title of his Top Fuel career and his first in the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Series.

Millican entered Sunday’s elimination rounds as the No. 1 qualifier for the fourth time this season and for the 14th event of his career after running a 3.739 at 331.12 mph on Saturday. A seven-hour rain delay to start Sunday couldn’t dampen Millican’s momentum, as the Parts Plus dragster outran Terry Totten in a first round with a 3.780 at 331 mph. Millican and the Parts Plus car topped those numbers in round two, eliminating Doug Kalitta with an excellent run of 3.72 at 334.90 mph—the third-fastest pass in class history and a new track speed record for Heartland Park.

With temperatures dropping Sunday evening, and the high dew point making the track unsafe for racing, NHRA officials postponed the remaining rounds until Monday. The next day, under sunny skies, the Parts Plus car outran Tony Schumacher in the semis to advance to the final round. Millican then clinched the second Wally trophy of his Top Fuel career by delivering a 3.727 at 332.59 mph to defeat Terry McMillen in the finals.

“I’d like to thank the entire Parts Plus family, from the membership to the headquarters staff to their manufacturer partners that co-sponsor the car, for always believing in this team,” Millican says. “In addition to their enthusiasm and unwavering support, Parts Plus provides crew chief David Grubnic and the rest of our team with the absolute best parts in the business, which have certainly helped make this Parts Plus car the quickest on the planet.”
