Dodging a bullet
This bulletin applies to 2007-2009 Dodge Dakota vehicles, equipped with the 3.7L engine and a 42RLE transmission. The transmission may remain in “Limp-In” mode (second gear) after an engine start, and the transmission will not shift to a higher gear. The condition may be intermittent. No transmission-related DTCs may be present.
Limp-In mode is used to protect the transmission. The transmission logic will remain in or revert to this mode if certain required operating parameters are not met in a specified time during engine start. The PCM may need to be selectively erased and reprogrammed.
1. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT.
2. After PCM reprogramming, clear any DTCs that may have set in other modules due to reprogramming.
3. Type the necessary information on an authorized modification label and attach it near the VECI label.
