Porsche Belt Tensioner Fail

This bulletin applies to 2008-2010 Porsche Cayenne vehicles equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine. The drive belt tensioner may be at fault if the following symptoms are present:

  • Vehicle is hard to steer (lack of power assist)
  • Red warning in instrument cluster (battery/generator warning)
  • Red warning in instrument cluster (engine temperature too high)

The belt tensioner can be defective due to vibrations, which can cause the spring in the belt tensioner to break. As of Sept. 11 and Oct. 9, 2009, modified versions of the following parts are installed:

  • Belt tensioner with profiled tensioning roller (previously smooth)
  • Smooth coolant pump pulley (previously profiled)
  • Smooth deflection roller (previously profiled)

In the event of a complaint, install the modified parts:

N...905.442.03.............Cheese head bolt M8 x 11 (3 required)

(Note: “Cheese head” screws feature a flat, thick head with a single straight drive slot for screwdriver use.)
