Don’t Get Fooled by Color

When servicing the 6T30/40/45/50 automatic transmission in a 2012 Chevy Orlando, a technician may note that the ATF has a very dark appearance, almost as if the fluid has been overheated or the clutches inside the transmission are distressed.

Note that the transmission fluid in these transmissions tends to turn dark due to rust inhibitors used on internal transmission parts during assembly.

If the ATF appears dark, do not assume that the transmission is damaged internally. Continue with diagnosis. Do not replace the transmission or the ATF based only on the appearance of the transmission fluid.
