Excessive cam bearing clearance may set DTCs

This TSB applies to 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and 2009-2011 Ford Escape, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan and 2009-2011 Mariner.

Vehicles equipped with the 3.0L engine built on or before 3-1-2011 may exhibit a MIL-on, with DTCs P0011, P0012, P0021, P0022 and/or P034X.

The cause may be traced to excessive wear in the camshaft thrust bearing cap(s).

1. Remove both valve covers. Remove both front intake camshaft thrust bearing caps (refer to the workshop manual section 303-01B).

2. If the camshaft thrust bearing cap(s) show surface wear, replace the cylinder head(s) where the affected caps are located.

Wear in the thrust bearing cap could be the cause of the variable camshaft timing (VCT) setting DTCs due to oil leakage as a resulr of excessive clearance in the bearing cap. This in turn will not allow enough oil to feed the VCT Phaser for proper operation.

If the camshaft thrust bearing cap(s) do not exhibit abnormal wear, re-install the bearings caps and torque cap bolts to 7.5 ft.-lbs., and proceed to the Step 3 (Note: slight polishing is normal and is not a reason to replace the cylinder head(s).

1.  Replace both VCT solenoids. If the vehicle has less than 30,000 miles, the intake gasket and spark plug well gaskets can be reused. Inspect and replace only if damage is visible. If mileage is greater than 30,000 miles, replace the intake and spark plug well gaskets. In all cases, the valve cover perimeter gasket must be replaced.
