Mazda Skyactiv Caution

This bulletin applies to 2012 Mazda Mazda3/Mazdaspeed3 vehicles. The recent Mazda Skyactiv-Drive FW6A-EL automatic transmission uses ATF Type FZ. Only use ATF-FZ to fill or top off the fluid level.

ATF-FZ is specially designed for use in the Skyactiv-Drive series automatic transmission. This is a low viscosity formula with less friction for better fuel economy. ATF-FZ is colored blue for easy identification. The dipstick is marked with an “FZ” on these models.

Note that the dipstick is secured with a mounting tab and a single bolt. When replacing the dipstick, be sure to reinstall the bolt, tightening the bolt to 71-88 in.-lbs.

The fluid level should be between the “L” and “F” dipstick marks when the STF is at least at 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Skyactiv-Drive FW6A-EL transmissions with ATF-FZ are “filled for life,” reportedly requiring no change intervals for the ATF, and flushing is not recommended as part of service maintenance. There are also no oil cooler lines. A replacement transmission will include a new oil cooler which is mounted directly to the case.
