More auto repair facilities are buying private label parts, according to a recent report from automotive research firm IMR Inc.

In 2018, IMR asked shops if they had increased their purchasing of private label and store brand parts over the previous two years "and 33.4% said yes. Now, 65.8% of shops report increased private label parts purchasing. This trend is projected to continue over the next year, with 68% of independent shops now reporting that they plan to increase their purchasing of private label parts."

IMR officials say the COVID-19 pandemic has played a major role in this shift. Independent shop owners surveyed by the company cite "customers trying to save money due to pandemic uncertainty" as the top reason why they continue to buy private label parts.

Factors like cost-effectiveness, better availability and better quality were cited by other respondents.
