Be Careful When Cleaning Hyundai Camera Lenses

Note the blurry/spotted view on the monitor caused by lens coating damage.

Hyundai issued a bulletin to identify and prevent possible damage to a vehicle’s backup and/or around-view camera lens coating caused by the improper use of harsh cleaning agents. The backup camera lens surface is coated in order to increase the penetration ratio of light. Universal car cleaning detergents and waxes should not affect the lens operation. However, if the camera lens is treated with a strong cleaning agent with too much acid/alkaline, this may result in damage to the lens coating and operation.

According to Hyundai, examples of cleaning agents that may damage camera lenses include such products as AK Metal Cleaner, Mother’s Chrome Wheel Cleaner, RainX glass water repellant, Zymol Auto Wash car shampoo, Black magic Bleche-black tire cleaner, RainX Bug & Tar cleaner and PB1 multi-purpose cleaner. If these or similar agents contact the camera lens,  clean off with water and a soft cloth as soon as possible.
