Volkswagen of America Inc. has announced it will end production of its Passat sedan in the United States, starting in 2022.

The company's Chattanooga, Tenn., plant, which currently builds the Passat, will "build future electric vehicles."

"With the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport in high-demand and the North American production launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV next year, our future in Chattanooga looks brighter than ever," says Scott Keogh, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America.

The Passat first appeared in the U.S. in 1990.
