Mazda Tribute

This bulletin applies to Mazda Tribute, model years 2001-2005. When diagnosing drivability or fuel/emissions-related DTCs, inspect the engine air filter and air inlet system carefully. Symptoms may include rough/low/erratic idle, engine stalling or hesitation, or the engine warning light not turning off.

Shifty Flash

Some 2011 Mazda Tribute vehicles equipped with a 6F35 automatic transmission may exhibit an intermittent harsh 1-2 shift or harsh 5-6 shift regardless of temperatures or soak time. Additionally, 4-5 shift flare may be experienced after an extended cold soak. 2.5L equipped vehicles with late 4-5 shift events/high rpm's may also benefit from this calibration update.

Dirty Solenoid Dilemma

Some 2010-2011 Mazda Tribute vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine may exhibit DTCs P0016 (crankshaft position – camshaft position correlation – Bank 1 Sensor A), P052A (cold start camshaft position timing over-advanced – Bank 1) and P052B (cold start camshaft position timing over-retarded – Bank 1). This may be accompanied by hard-start and/or rough idle concerns.

Mazda Cam Cap Adjustment

This bulletin applies to 2010 Mazda Tribute models. Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent knocking or thumping noise from the left cylinder head. After the engine temperature reaches 210-220 degrees Fahrenheit, the noise is typically heard from the rear of the engine as the vehicle comes to a stop.

Rough Mazda With No DTC

This bulletin applies to 2009 Mazda Tribute models. Some vehicles may exhibit a rough idle when the engine is cold, under load (such as A/C on) and in Drive range. All ignition and fuel system tests may pass and there are no DTCs.

Mazda Misfire

This bulletin applies to 2005-2006 Mazda tribute models. Some vehicles may intermittently exhibit the MIL on or flashing, with DTCs P0316, _0300, P0301, P0302, P0303 or P0304. This condition may be due to the PCM ignition profile being incorrectly set if the battery was recently disconnected or discharged.

Frozen Treat

Some 2008 Mazda Tribute vehicles may exhibit engine oil leaking from the dipstick tube or the front or rear crankshaft seals. The condition is likely due to positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) freezing when ambient temperature is below -20 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing engine crankcase pressure to build up.

Cranky Tribute

Some 2008 Mazda Tributes equipped with a 2.3L engine and CD4E automatic transmission may exhibit an intermittent crank no-start, hard start or rough running after starting in ambient temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Note that this bulletin does not apply to Tribute hybrid models.

Want cheese with that whine?

Some 2005-2006 Mazda Tributes equipped with an automatic transaxle may exhibit a driveline whine at 20-45 mph during light acceleration or deceleration. The sound may be more pronounced if the vehicle is equipped with steel wheels.

A Tribute to technology

Some 2010 Mazda Tribute vehicles may exhibit a MIL on with DTC P0128 (coolant temp below thermostat regulating temperature). This concern may be more pronounced in cold ambient temperatures when the engine is first started after a cold soak, and then driven under light load/low speed conditions with the climate control blower motor setting on high. No drivability issues may be present.
