Engine sealing tips: How to avoid problems from annoying leaks to devastating damage

Sealing an engine involves several concerns, including the containment of combustion pressure, preventing coolant and oil from entering the combustion process, and preventing oil, coolant and vacuum from leaking out of the engine. Theoretically this should be a straightforward process, but if performed incorrectly without attention to detail, problems can range from annoying leaks to devastating internal engine damage.

Ford cam timing

Some 2004-2010 Ford F-150, 2005-2010 F-Super Duty F-250/350, 2005-2012 Expedition, 2005-2012 Navigator and 2006-2008 Mark LT vehicles equipped with a 5.4L 3V engine may exhibit an intermittent rattle noise/rough idle when the engine is at operating temperature. The issue is caused by oscillating cam timing. DTCs P0022, P0021, P0340 and/or P0341 may be stored in the PCM.

Chevy Cruze-ing along

Owners of 2011-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles may complain about an intermittent engine no-crank condition. They may also note that by cycling the ignition key off and then back on, the engine may crank. This condition may be caused by the ECM receiving an intermittent exhaust camshaft position sensor (CMP) signal as soon as the ignition is turned to the on position.

Mopar warm-up

This bulletin applies to 2008-2010 Dodge Charger and Magnum vehicles, equipped with the 2.7L engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. A rough idle on startup with ambient temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit may be experienced.

Focus beep

Some 2013-2014 Ford Focus ST vehicles may exhibit a beeping sound from the engine area during KOEO (key off, engine off) or briefly after starting the engine. This concern is caused by the Engine Sound Symposer re-initializing unnecessarily.

Raining on Saab parade

Some owners of 2005-2008 Saab 9-7X vehicles may comment on an intermittent MIL/SES light illuminated with a message center or an indicator that displays “Reduced Engine Power.” DTC P2138 (accelerator pedal position sensor 1-2 correlation) may be set.

Finicky Bimmer

This TSB applies to BMW vehicles equipped with the N63 engine produced up to 2-15-2009. An affected N63 vehicle may intermittently exhibit any of the following conditions:

VW engine timing

This TSB applies to all 2008-2013 VW models. The customer may complain about engine rattling noises after starting, or no-starts. This may be the result of incorrect timing chain tension due to chain tensioner issues.

Mazda truck heads

Some 2004-2006 Mazda B3000 light trucks may experience a MIL on with DTCs P0300-P0306 and P0316 set, rough running at various rpm, rough idle and misfires. This may be due to an engine exhaust valve seat recession causing a loss of compression.
