This bulletin applies to all BMW 3, 4, 5 or 6 series vehicles equipped with a wheel bolt pattern of 5 x 120 and 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 series equipped with a wheel bolt pattern of 5 x 112. A ticking noise may be heard from a front wheel while cornering without the brakes applied, most noticeable at low speeds. This may be due to microscopic movement of the contact interface between the inner brake disc and the wheel bearing flange on vehicles equipped with lightweight brake discs.

Check which type of brake rotors are on the vehicle. See the photo to identify rotor type. If lightweight rotors are on the vehicle, remove the rotor and clean the bearing flange with brake cleaner. Install a “friction ring” on the wheel bearing flange. Reassemble. Do this for both wheel locations on the same axle. Note that BMW recommends replacing all wheel bolts at this time.
