Dodge Ram Customers Complain about Chatter

July 15, 2020

This bulletin applies to 2016-2018 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 3500 Cab Chassis, equipped with an anti-spin differential rear axle. The customer may comment about a chatter, shudder or vibration from the rear axle during turns.

This may happen more as the vehicle ages, especially if the vehicle is used extensively for towing or hauling heavy loads. The cause may be due to degradation of the rear axle fluid. It is very important to follow the routine maintenance schedules on these vehicles.

If the vehicle use includes police, fleet, off-road or frequent towing, regular axle fluid changes are required every two years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Chrysler recommends using  SAE 75W-85 HD Ram GL-5 synthetic axle lubricant. Capacity for the 292 AA rear axle is 8.8 pints. For the 292 AA 11.5 anti-spin rear axle, capacity is listed as 8.45 pints. For the 300 AA 11.8 11.8 axle, capacity is listed as 8 pints.

Removal of the differential cover and anti-sway bar is required for draining and cleaning. Be sure to properly torque fasteners during reassembly. Apply thread locker to the differential cover bolts and torque all 14 bolts to 29 ft.-lbs. Torque the stabilizer bar bolts to the differential housing brackets to 37 ft.-lbs.
