Replacing EPS gearbox

March 11, 2024
This bulletin announces the availability of a new electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox assembly.

This bulletin announces the availability of a new electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox assembly designed to address a limited number of customer concerns regarding uneven steering effort felt when turning right or left.

In areas where high concentrations of road salt are used to melt ice and snow, corrosion may develop and cause a portion of the gearbox housing to crack if the vehicle experiences a harsh impact from hitting a pothole/road hazard.

On Forester models, the new steering gearbox assembly was incorporated into production starting with VIN J*462815. Since this change took place after production ended for all but 2018 Forester, there are no starting VINs for the other applicable models (2012-2016 Impreza, 2013-2017 Crosstrek).

34110FJ231.....................................2015-2016 Impreza

If a vehicle is presented with a concern of uneven steering effort, inspect the steering box for any signs of cracking (see below illustration).

To determine if the steering box is the new-style unit, verify and compare the part number on the label located on the bottom cover of the pinion. The new assemblies have been redesigned in addition to utilizing materials having improved rust and corrosion resistance.

If a crack is confirmed, the EPS steering gear box assembly must be replaced. Refer to the new-style gear box assemblies provided in this bulletin.
